Empowering the Future: GSSC Project Concludes with Remarkable Success

Empowering the Future: The Green Small Smart Cities Project Concludes with Remarkable Success. The Green Small Smart Cities (GSSC) project, a beacon of international cooperation and sustainability, draws to a close after an intensive 30 months of endeavour. Funded by the European Union under the COSME programme (GA Proposal Number: 951203), GSSC has exemplified a robust commitment to fostering collaboration between 5 European strategic clusters, paving the way for global partnerships in fields of strategic interest beyond Europe.

GSSC: Nurturing Smart Cities for a Sustainable Future

A \’smart\’ city encompasses innovation, entrepreneurship, economic activity, knowledge and talent generation, and a digital society and economy. GSSC set out to construct this intelligent amalgamation through purposeful citizen activities and sound resource management. Its focus was to assess the opportunities and necessities of cities in developing countries, ranging from energy infrastructure to digital connectivity and sustainable resource utilization.

Empowering the Global Community

The GSSC project stands as a testament to the European Union\’s commitment to supporting less developed regions of the world. It facilitated the dissemination of sustainable technological solutions, driving the internationalization strategy of innovative European SMEs with shared visions of building a better world.

GSSC\’s General Objectives

The GSSC consortium\’s overarching objective was to establish the European Strategic Cluster Partnership in the Green Small Smart Cities sector (GSSC ESCP-4i). This partnership aimed to spread the use of sustainable technological solutions from Europe to less developed regions worldwide. The consortium, consisting of five highly complementary members, focused on a specific market niche: Small Cities.

The General Objectives Were:

  1. Objective 1 (O1): Intensify cluster and business cooperation across borders by promoting cross-sectoral collaboration and strengthening the value chain.
  2. Objective 2 (O2): Merge different innovation players from water, ICT, energy, and nanotechnology into GSSC\’s sector.
  3. Objective 3 (O3): Establish European Strategic Partnerships in the GSSC sector.
  4. Objective 4 (O4): Promote competitiveness and internationalization of GSSC project cluster members and SMEs in Europe and beyond.
  5. Objective 5 (O5): Improve the visibility of the consortium and affiliated SME entities on an international scale.

A Vision Realized

The GSSC project successfully completed its mission, ensuring close partner involvement in target market selection within Asia, Africa, and LATAM. The consortium established a robust decision-making process, ensuring SMEs\’ vital contributions for future endeavours beyond the project\’s lifespan.

Overcoming Challenges: COVID-19 and the War in Ukraine

In the face of adversity, GSSC remained steadfast in its commitment to supporting SMEs severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. The project viewed this as an imperative to reactivate the economy and stand alongside those on the path to recovery.

Leveraging Tools for Success

Successful project implementation was secured by effective leveraging of various specific tools such as the structure of CEDEG, z.s – CE Digital & Enviro Grouping (CEDEG), which is a research, business, and networking cluster that connects companies, organizations, and technology platforms interested in creating synergies in the field of digitization and progressive environmental technologies.

Collaborative Efforts

Water Smart Territories S3 Network was instrumental in embedding collaboration with relevant S3 partnerships within the joint international strategy carried out within the framework of WP4. The ECCP and ECSP-4i Forum, along with the Catalogue of GSSC products and services, have been launched and disseminated among all stakeholders. Three exploratory missions were developed, Praia – Cape Verde, Da Nang – Vietnam and Valparaiso and Santiago – Santiago de Chile were the target cities visited by partners, leaving a high impact on the SMEs represented by the consortium. Benchmarking analysis and follow-up activities have been included in the technical report for this final reporting period.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

The GSSC project leaves a lasting legacy, intensifying cluster and business cooperation, uniting innovation players in the Green Small Smart Cities sectors and establishing European Strategic Partnerships. It has enhanced competitiveness and internationalization for cluster members and SMEs while bolstering visibility on the global stage.

As we bid farewell to GSSC, its achievements will continue to reverberate, illuminating the path to a more sustainable, interconnected, and prosperous world.

After 2.5 years of hard work and dedication, the Green Small Smart Cities project has end with wonderful results. This ambitious initiative aimed to promote sustainable urban development and create smarter and greener cities across the world.

Led by a consortium of five expert clusters specializing in solar energy, sustainable water management, green technologies, ICT, and nanotechnology, the Green Small Smart Cities project has successfully devised innovative solutions in the selected cities, propelling them towards the vision of becoming truly Green Small Smart Cities. The collective experience in creating opportunities for all companies within the value chain of each sector, networking and synergies between small companies and public administration, has been decisive for this achievement.

The project\’s success can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of all those involved, including local governments, industry partners, and community organizations. By working together, they were able to overcome numerous challenges and create a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.

As the project draws to a close, we would like to thank everyone who played a part in making it a success. We are proud of what we have achieved together, and we hope that the lessons learned and best practices developed during the project will continue to guide and inspire future efforts to create smarter, greener cities.

We look forward to continuing our work in promoting sustainable urban development and creating smarter and greener cities for all.
